Building Your Own Path

Updated: Dec 25, 2025

It was at the age of 24 that I finally came home from my travels.  I needed to come back and set some roots for myself.  I had lived what I needed to live abroad, but home was calling my name.

I was with my English boyfriend that I had met in Thailand.

We decided that Canada was where the roots were going to be set for our future together.

Everyone’s life path is different.  Some go to school, some travels, some work.  It’s your life to build.  Mine was unconventional in my family.

I hadn't take the regular path of going to "school".  I went through the School of life to find myself and what I loved.

I had barely finished college.

I couldn't stand the school system and sitting in a classroom for hours, unless I had some projects I could get involved in. What was I going to do? I felt hopeless, but inspired.

After coming back home, I got a job and took a course on how to start my own company. We bought our first home and investment property together. We were starting "life", the modern world type of life.

We adopted our first daughter, Roxy, our dog.  She came into our life, a beautiful rescue from the SPCA. She had been found on her own on the streets of Montreal, emaciated, alone and with no collar. She was sick and nervous. We took her in as a foster family to start and we very quickly became hooked and in love with her.  So we adopted her.

Our new home was also our baby. We gave it TLC (Tender love and care). We did some renovations and made a little nest for ourselves. We lived there for 3 years, before we knew we needed more space, because of the bundle of joy, that was going to join our family.

A home is what you make of it. A life is how you want to create it. The time and love you put into making it feel like what you desire.

Its not always what others think it should be, but its what you are happy to make it. Even Starting from very little or a lot.

If you’ve taken a different path to what your family expect of you.  Or have followed your own intuition.  Or wish you could have followed your own plans.  What made you take that decision?

How has it changed your life?  What would you do differently?
